The Dominican Republic’s Samana Peninsula: The Most Beautiful Spot on Planet Earth

By Jane Goodwin | April 20, 2007

The Dominican Republic’s Samana Peninsula, which was once an island, used to be separated from the mainland by a very narrow channel. The channel filled in over the years, and now the former island is a peninsula. It’s famous, too; Christopher Columbus walked on it. Remember your history: Columbus discovered America, true, but he didn’t discover the America most Americans think he discovered. He discovered CENTRAL AMERICA, not North America. Elementary children who sing the song "In fourteen hundred and ninety-two. . . ." are singing the truth; but few of them realize Columbus never set foot on North America. But I digress.

The Samana Peninsula has everything. Coconut-covered mountains that go right down to the sea. . . . white sand beaches. . . balmy Caribbean nights. . . . brightly colored coral reefs teeming with fish representing every color of the rainbow. . .flowers. . . parrots. . . and ever-present breezes. . . .

Something else to remember about Christopher Columbus and his discovery of the Dominican Republic: His famous quotation about how the DR was ". . . the fairest land on the face of the earth." It is, too. It gets more beautiful with each passing day.

If you are seeking a fast-paced, bustling location, you’d best skip the Samana Peninsula. Life here is laid-back, slow-moving, romantic, and old-fashioned. To visit the Samana Peninsula is to discover a simpler place and time where the magic of discovery awaits you around every corner.

The Dominican Republic’s Bay of Samana is one of the world’s best whale-watching locations, in fact. And there aren’t many places on planet Earth where, during one short walk, you can cross white sand beach, patches of tropical jungle, meadows of flowers, and more beaches, all in an hour or so. Diverse landscape? Samana has it, full-blown.

Let’s add "serenading humpback whales" to that list of beautiful things to be seen and heard in the Dominican Republic’s Samana Peninsula.
