Retiring to Belize: What Do You Need?
By Jane Goodwin | June 26, 2007
In order to retire to Belize, you must be at least 45 years old. You must also show proof of an income of at least $2,000 per month. The Belize Ministry of National Security will do a very thorough background check on you.
You will need to submit the following to the Belize Tourism Board, which will then forward your documentation to the Department of Immigration and Nationality: Your birth certificate, a marriage certificate if you are bringing a spouse and dependents, a police record that is less than one month old, a passport, the aforementioned proof of income, four passport size photos and a medical exam, which includes an AIDS test. You will have to pay all the fees associated with this paperwork. These fees can run into several thousand dollars, depending on how many people you are bringing with you. You should also know that as long as you are in Belize via the retirement program, you are not allowed to work for payment.
This might seem like an awful lot of work on your part, just to move to Belize, but in the long run, it will all be worth while. Belize is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and once you’re established there, you’ll be very content.
