Relocating to Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, or Nicaragua? Learn the Language!

By Jane Goodwin | October 17, 2007

If you are planning, or even just considering, relocation to Mexico, Panama, Costa Rica, Belize, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, or Nicaragua, you will do yourself a big favor by learning at least a little Spanish before you move there.

Even though most of the Central American people speak at least some English, and most speak excellent English, it’s a good idea to have a rudimentary knowledge of the language of the people from whom you will be doing any kind of business. It’s more than a ‘good idea,’ in fact: it’s just plain common sense.

Expats in the Central American countries who have taken the trouble to learn the language of their new country will find that it’s easier to make new friends, easier to negotiate costs, easier to conduct business, easier to fit into the culture, and, well, just plain EASIER.

There are many excellent language programs that can teach you the language basics in a short time. It’s also a good idea to get, and carry with you, an English-Spanish/Spanish-English dictionary.

Make sure you learn all about the money, too. Know how to make change. Know what things cost.
