Real Estate and Healthcare in Nicaragua
By Jane Goodwin | June 15, 2007
A lot of people are still afraid of Nicaragua. When they think of Nicaragua, they think first and foremost of left-wing guerrillas and riots and oppression. This is no longer true, but the fact that some people remember the country’s past so well has its positive aspects.
It makes real estate prices very, very low.
And now, Nicaragua is emerging as a retirement heaven where inexpensive colonial mansions and cheap land surrounding crater lakes and active volcanoes and beautiful turquoise beaches are selling for incredibly low prices. American and Canadian retirees are discovering Nicaragua, and they are loving it.
There are large expatriate communities all over Central America, but as more and more retirees are discovering these beautiful places, the prices are beginning to rise. Not in Nicaragua, though. Not yet, anyway.
Nicaragua is considered the safest nation in Central America, in spite of its violent past. Prices are incredibly low here, even today. A three-course meal at a top restaurant can be had for as little as fifteen or twenty dollars per person. An ocean-front, five-bedroom home can be bought for a little over a hundred thousand dollars. A full-time maid will cost you around a hundred dollars a month. You can even buy an ISLAND here! Think of it - your own island.
Retirees who might have trouble making ends meet in the States are finding that in Nicaragua, they are able to live very well, indeed. With Central America, the affordability factor is extremely important.
Healthcare is one of the most important things on many retirees’ minds, but in Nicaragua, as well as in the other Central American countries, the healthcare is so good that many Americans travel down here to take advantage of it!
