Panama or Nicaragua: Each Has Its Unique Pull

By Jane Goodwin | October 16, 2007

Let’s say that you’ve decided, definitely, that you want to relocate to Central America. Let’s say, then, that you’re torn between Panama and Nicaragua. How in the world can you choose between places, both of which represent Paradise?

You’ve come this far; now you have to get down to the bare facts.

First, politics. Both Panama and Nicaragua are stable, although different, and both welcome retirees and treat them well. Both countries give expats amazing perks, both financially and legally.

If you are in good health and are seeking, more than anything else, a paradise wherein the cost of living is low. . . if you are looking forward to immersing yourself in a foreign culture, learning the language, the ‘ways,’ etc, then Nicaragua is the country for you. I hope you own a four-wheel-drive vehicle; those Nicaraguan roads can be iffy, but the destination at the end of that road is always well worth the trip.

If, on the other hand, you are mainly looking for a large American community in the middle of Paradise, wherein everybody speaks English and the health care is excellent, you might look closely at Panama for your retirement destination.

Prices in Nicaragua are, for the most part, lower. Accommodations in Panama are, for the most part, more modern and convenient. It all boils down to what you are seeking!

Both Nicaragua and Panama have unequaled beauty and unrivaled features and unique attractions. Do your homework before you uproot yourself and move to either Garden of Eden.
