Of Passports, Waiting, and Moving Your Things to Mexico For Keeps!

By Jane Goodwin | August 23, 2007

Good news for U.S. travelers to Mexico; delays in getting your passport issued or renewed no longer prevent you from flying to Mexico! Even though the U.S. passed legislation last year that would require U.S. citizens to carry passports when visiting Mexico, this doesn’t take effect until September 30,so you’ll be able to leave and return to the U.S. if you can show that your passport application is being processed.

Be sure you have proof that your passport is being processed, though. The wait time for passports is 10-12 weeks!

Because many people don’t have that much time to wait, the State Department and Homeland Security have agreed to allow people to fly to Mexico using a photo ID, such as a driver’s license, and proof from the State Department that you have a passport application in process.

You can find out where and how to apply for a passport here
.

Please remember that this waiver is only for Mexico and Canada, and is only in effect until the last of September.

Remember, too, that even if you intend to stay in Mexico and not return to the States, you will still need that passport. And we don’t blame you in the least if, once you see what life in Mexico is like, you want to stay and experience it for the rest of your life! It’s not that difficult a move, either, not if you know who to call. . . .
