Nursing/Retirement Homes in Mexico
By Jane Goodwin | August 24, 2007
Many older retirees who no longer wish, or are no longer able, to live alone, are moving to Mexico.
Nursing homes and retirement homes in Mexico are luring them with amazingly low prices, beautiful perpetually warm climates, and competent, caring, friendly care.
Many older people can no longer endure the colder climates of the north, and the warmth of Mexico is very appealing.
In 2006, the average rate for a private room in a nursing home was over $206 a day. The average Mexican nursing homes charge between $18 and $50 a day. You do the math.
Once established in Mexico, most retirees are eligible for membership in the Mexican Social Security Institute, which costs about $140 a year. With IMSS, surgeries and procedures won’t cost the patient anything at all.
Bear in mind that Medicare, Medicaid, and the Department of Veterans Affairs won’t pay for services outside the United States, so investigate your own situation thoroughly before making a decision about a nursing or retirement home. It’s true that most of the Mexican facilities are excellent, just as the American facilities are, but it is also true that once in a while, in American or Mexico or wherever, somebody will find a clunker. Ask around; word of mouth is the best kind of advertisement.
It is also true that some older people can’t adjust to the Mexican food. This is rarer, but it does occasionally happen.
But it is true that for most people, the financial savings, the climate, the general care and treatment, and the facilities themselves are just what the doctor ordered.
Nursing/retirement homes can be found in any Mexican state by searching for “asilos” at www.seccionamarilla.com.mx. If you phone from the States, the number must be preceded by 011-52-.
