“In Fourteen Hundred and Ninety-Two, Columbus Sailed The Ocean Blue. . .” to the Dominican Republic.

By Jane Goodwin | August 28, 2007

357px-Coat_of_arms_of_the_Dominican_Republic.svgMost people who live in the United States honestly believe that Columbus touched land there.

I’m sorry to burst their bubble, but it just didn’t happen that way.

Columbus did discover America, of course. Central America, that is.

Columbus came ashore in the Dominican Republic, not the United States. He liked the climate, the beaches, and the general ’feel’ of DR so much, he came back again the next year and founded the first permanent European settlement in America, after the Vikings in Canada.

People who choose the Dominican Republic as their vacation or retirement destination are always glad to know that dollars are accepted almost anywhere, even though the official Dominican currency is the Dominican peso.

Columbus Day in the DR is always a big deal, too. After all, Columbus was actually THERE, in the Dominican Republic.

"1492" was correct, though. The first visit, anyway.
