If You Are In Belize And You Want A Beer. . . .
By Jane Goodwin | May 23, 2007
For thousands of years, civilizations all over the planet have been brewing beer. Some of these beers have even been good. Some of these beers have not.
If you are in Belize, however, you can always get a good beer. Just be sure you get Belikin.
Belikin Beer is Belize’s own beer. It’s brewed by the Belize Brewing Company, Ltd, of Ladyville, and it gets its name from the ancient Mayan language for ‘Road to the East." Belikin makes several different types of beer, some of which are lager, stout, supreme, and a local Guinness.
Belikin Beer is owned by the Bowen family; the present brewery is operated by the third generation of Bowens. The brewery shares its grounds and facilities with the Belize Coca Cola bottling plant and the Crystal Water bottling facility.
Belikin Beer uses a German recipe; in fact, the Belikin brewmaster is from Germany and all the plant’s equipment came from Germany.
Belikin Beer ’s bottles are all recycled and have a lifespan of approximately ten fillings. Those who have observed the cleaning of these bottles agree that it is thorough and that each container, after this process, can only be spotless.
When it’s hot outside, a lot of people reach for a good beer. In Belize, that good beer would be Belikin Beer.
According to Dennis Wolfe, of the San Pedro Sun, "When the sun is beating down on Ambergris Caye, thirsty tourists want beer and they want beer that tastes good. That is why in Belize, when people ask for beer, they mean Belikin."
