Healthcare in Costa Rica: Excellent!

By Jane Goodwin | August 21, 2007

The Costa Rican government has instituted a kind of socialized healthcare program wherein all residents are guaranteed care. Costa Rica is small - not quite as large as Virginia - but in this small country there are 20 state-run hospitals. Sixteen of these hospitals are in the larger cities, but the rest are scattered in convenient locations throughout the country. If you are visiting an isolated beach, you might be two hours away from a major hospital; otherwise, you will be within viable distance.

Costa Rica has many private hospitals as well as clinics that can provide basic medical care to both residents and visitors. In other words, wherever you are in Costa Rica, there is medical care close by.

As for elective surgeries and procedures, Costa Rica has many “recovery retreats” that range from basic medical needs to luxury spas, staffed by licensed doctors and nurses. Plastic surgery is a biggie in Costa Rica, and people come from all over the world to have procedures done for less than half the price the same thing would cost in the States.

How inexpensive is the medical care in Costa Rica? A simple coronary bypass that costs $60,000 in the States costs half that in Costa Rica. And a patient seeking breast implants might pay $12,000 in the States, but can get the same thing in Costa Rica for $6,000 or less. Many Americans without health insurance are flocking to Central America for their medical needs.

In other words, no one in Costa Rica need fear being left high and dry without proper medical care. Costa Rica has the best.
