Guatemala’s Pacaya Volcano Is A Marvelous Sight!
By Jane Goodwin | April 16, 2007
Pacaya Volcano, in Guatemala, is a complex basaltic volcano that can be seen from Guatemala City, the nation’s capital. Pacaya is a large volcano, and has been erupting intermittently for many years; it is considered a highly active volcano. In spite of its reputation for ’spewing,’ it is also the most frequently visited volcano in Guatemala, and, among other things, is famous for its two beautiful hiking trails.
It is recommended that amateurs ascend Pacaya only with a guide, which will cost approximately $15.00 per person.
Pacaya has several slow-moving lava rivers flowing down its slope, and tourists flock to the volcano to see these. Word of warning: DO NOT TOUCH.
However you decide to climb the volcano, be forwarned that it is not an easy hike. You will be walking in ash and loose volcanic rock, and it’s easy to lose your footing. Once at the top of the volcano, however, the views are magnificent, and well worth the walk.
Be careful of other things when you are standing on the side of a volcano; sometimes it’s difficult to breathe because of the sulfur clouds and smoke, and you need to be careful where you sit because of the small active vents. In other words, take care; you’re dealing with Mother Nature when you deal with an active volcano, and Mother Nature always wins.
The park surrounding Pacaya is wonderful; there is safe parking for your car, and there are many rangers patrolling at all times.
Don’t forget your camera!
