Finding A Doctor in the Dominican Republic
By Jane Goodwin | July 13, 2007
One of the very first things you should do, once you’ve moved into your new home in the Dominican Republic, is find a good doctor. This isn’t difficult, because the Dominican Republic has a lot of very good doctors. It’s just going to be a little different from the way you found your doctor back in the States.
First of all, there are few general practitioners in the Dominican Republic. Most of the doctors here consider themselves to be specialists of some kind; therefore, if you have children, your first move would be to find a pediatrician.
Then, you must find an internist for yourselves. With these two specialists, you’ve also got yourselves a couple of great general practitioners!
Your insurance company may help you by recommending someone, or by steering you to a clinic where several good doctors work, allowing you to do your own choosing among them.
In case of an emergency, of course, you should dial “711.”
