Eat Like A King, In Belize

By Jane Goodwin | September 25, 2007

Let’s pretend we’re living in Belize, and we need to go to the grocery store. How much money should we take with us?

Well, let’s see.

For two dollars, we can get a freshly-baked loaf of bread and some eggs. For another dollar, we can buy a cold bottle of freshly-squeezed orange juice. Do you prefer some margarine on your bread? We can get a stick for a quarter.

Bananas? Eight for a dollar. Limes? Six for a dollar. Watermelon? Around a quarter per pound. Most fruit you can just pick off the tree that’s bound to be in your yard somewhere. Belize is famous for its fantastic fresh fruit.

Now, how about dinner? You’re in the mood for some fresh fish? That’s too easy. Just walk down to the pier and buy some from the night fishermen. It’s about two dollars for a full pound, and for another dollar, the guy will fillet it for you.

Of course, we need some coffee; Belize is FAMOUS for its incomparable coffee, and because of its location, it’s also easy to get coffee from Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic as well. The coffee is going to be more expensive than you’d think - about $12 for a pound - but it’s well worth it.

Now, get your calculator and add up the dollars. It won’t take you very long, because it doesn’t cost very much to eat like a king, in Belize.
