Costa Rica’s Hot Springs

By Jane Goodwin | April 5, 2007

All of Central America is riddled with volcanoes, and it only stands to reason that there would also be many hot springs. And there are.

The same scientific, geological processes that create the volcanoes are also responsible for the hot springs. Costa Rica has many hot springs, mineral pools, and even naturally warm waterfalls.

AND, where there are hot springs, there are also beautiful flowers. They love the mineral waters, too. As you bathe in the various pools with their cascades of steaming water, you can smell the fragrant perfumes of the tropical flowers. And where there are flowers, there will also be birds and butterflies. The Costa Rican flowers and plants are among the most beautiful in the world.

This blog has featured the Arenal volcano before. Deep in the Arenal volcano, begins the Tabacon River. Naturally, a river that flows beneath a live volcano is going to contain hot water! And from the volcano, the water, heated to approximately 101 degrees, flows down to the natural mineral pools.

There are many hot springs in Costa Rica, but here are a few:

At Baldi, Tabacon, and Quipos Hot Springs, you will find many pools with temperatures varying from 35 C to 65 C. Each of these hot springs has many mineral fountains and hot springs swimming pools. Relax at Baldi Hot Springs, Tabacon Hot Springs, and Quipos Hot Springs in Costa Rica; while you soak and sigh, you will also have some of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Arenal Volcano in all of the country.

And you thought French Lick, Indiana, had a lot of hot springs. . . . well, they do, but Costa Rica clearly outnumbers them.
