Championship Golf in Belize? It Won’t Be Long Now!
By Jane Goodwin | April 24, 2007
Belize is, of course, famous for its fantastic golf courses, but it has never had a destination resort with a championship golf course. Until now.
A mere 20-minute drive away from the Belize International Airport, just a little ways from the Belize TourismVillage where the cruise ships arrive daily, and handy to most city businesses, hotels, and restaurants, the new golf course promises to be a challenging beauty! Construction on the new championship course - 18 holes, and designed by Arthur Hills of Toledo-based Arthur Hills/Steve Forrest and Associates - will begin in January of 2008, and if all goes well, it will open in early 2009. It will be accompanied, of course, by a 34,000-square-foot clubhouse.
Belize, already famous for world-class diving and fishing, ". . . will also soon be known for affordable luxy living and championship golf, all with a strong Belizean flavor," says J. Trevor Miles, president and CEO of Smugglers Run Plantation, a 1,000-acre master-planned community that will include 600 town homes and duplex villas, 339 private estate lots, 26 equestrian estate lots, 22 executive estate lots, 540 deluxe condominiums, 200 themed condominiums, a 200-room all-suite hotel, a 77-room themed all-suites hotel, spa and a town center with retail shopping and cinema. Also planned are 100 luxury sea-view condominiums, waterfront access featuring a marina with 240 slips, and a beach club component.
Belize is a place of such incredible beauty; to have the added advantage of a championship golf course and Edenish places to live. . . why would anyone ever want to go anywhere else?
Outside my windows, it’s dark and cold and rainy, and it’s only a little after five in the afternoon. In Belize, the sun is shining and it’s lovely and warm, with a breeze that brings the scent of flowers. Outside my house, the pollen is blowing. If I lived in Belize, I would breathe in the blossoms’ perfume and the scent of the sea and fresh air.
The cost of living in Belize is far lower than in the United States or Canada. A dollar goes a long way in Belize.
And if you are a golfer, it would be Paradise indeed.
