Breakfast in Costa Rica

By Jane Goodwin | May 30, 2007

You’ll need some white flour to make pancakes; that will cost about 75 cents for a kilo. Add to that some eggs (1.50) and some evaporated milk (80 cents for a 400 g. can) and a little sugar ($1.60 for two kilos, and you can put some on your cereal, as well) and you’ve got pancakes.

Of course, you’ll need to pour some syrup on those pancakes (1.75 for 24 ounces) and you’re all set.

If you want cereal, you’ve already got the sugar. You can get 250 gr. of oatmeal for well under a dollar, but Cheerios, Raisin Bran, and Corn Flakes will cost in the neighborhood of four dollars for a 15-ounce box. Rice Krispies are a little cheaper, but not much.

You might want some toast with your breakfast; a loaf of bread in Costa Rica will cost about $1.60. Many people in Central America make their bread from scratch; after a few months, I’m betting you’ll have your own little bottle of sourdough starter yeasting on your kitchen counter. I’ll post some recipes for sourdough bread later; keep coming back here or you’ll be sorry!

Want some orange juice with your pancakes? Here, you’ll really find the bargains. Oranges in a tropical country are very inexpensive; in Costa Rica, you can two dozen freshly picked oranges for just a little over a dollar.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you know. Eat up!

More Central American prices to come. See you right here tomorrow!
