Belize: Placencia Has Jaguars, Beaches, Sharks, Orchids, Coral, Kayaks, Alligators, Manatees and PERFECTION!
By Jane Goodwin | April 12, 2007
Belize has so many beautiful beaches; it’s hard to declare a favorite. Among the top ten, however, would have to be the fantastic Placencia.
Placencia is picture-postcard-perfection; indeed, many of the beach postcards tourists sold all over the world are actually of Placencia Beach. It’s almost too perfect to be real!
Placencia, a spectacular peninsula on the southern Belize shore, is a favorite spot for both residents and tourists, and it’s easy to understand why. Not only is the beach itself a thing of beauty, but there are many other activities offered here, as well.
Snorkeling, fishing, scuba diving, jungle and river safaris, manatee watching, sailing, bird-watching. . . these are just a few of the exciting things you can do on Belize’s Placencia Beach. Nature-lovers can explore the peninsula for orchids, bromeliads, and both shore and land birds. Bring your bicycle. Rent a kayak. (Don’t disturb the alligators!)
Once you’re established at Placencia, be sure to check out the Jaguar Preserve. It’s the only one in the world, and it’s only an hour away from the beach. Go at night; jaguars are nocturnal. You’ll see other big cats in the preserve, as well. Check the trees for toucans!
By the way, RIGHT NOW is the best time to see the whale sharks during their annual migration. The huge valleys of white coral sands that separate the vast canyons of various coral make the perfect resting places for whale sharks, as well as for nurse sharks and rays.
Bring your camera.
