Ministry of Health will host its Healthy Lifestyles Fair this Saturday, May 26th. The fair comes as part of the Ministry’s Public Health Department and Health Education Unit, HECOPAB, for the Central Region. Love News contacted the Ministry’s Technical Advisor for Health Promotion, Erica Goldson, to find out more.

Erica Goldson, Technical Advisor for Health Promotion for the Ministry of Health, says:

“We are having this fair on Saturday beginning at 9 am in the Cinderella Plaza area, so the area will be closed off. We are having representation from a wide cross section of agencies-the Belize Red Cross,The Belize Family Life Association, . . the Voluntary Counseling and Testing Center doing HIV testing. . . diabetes checks, hypertension checks, etc. We’ll also have doctors out there along with nurses doing just general check ups. So if there is anybody who would want to come to the event to get check up then they can get it done on that particular day.The outside of the agency is providing services on that particular day.We also want to try to see if we can incorporate some kind of sporting activity because we want to promote the whole issue of people integrating active stuff in their life.So we want to try and do like maybe basketball marathon during the event as well.So it’s going to be like a whole family fun day where everybody can go out and request health information and services to promote the whole awareness of the importance of healthy lifestyle and at the same time we want people to have fun for that day.So I would like to take this opportunity to invite all the people in the immediate area so that they can tell the wider population in Belize to come out and have something meaningful to do on a Saturday.”

Goldson says the fair is part of an overall healthy lifestyles project that HECOPAB has embarked upon.

“We had done several activities as a part of a whole healthy lifestyle service project that we have been doing in the particular area,in the Kelly Street area and Simon Lamb Street and part of Freetown Road and we had started with basically house-to-house education looking at the whole issue of environmental sanitation. And we had also done exercises where we’ve provided the residents with rat poison and we did a massive clean up campaign in the area.So as a part of the whole issue we wanted to bring certain health services and health information to people in the area with the understanding that they will utilize the information to try to change certain health lifestyle practices to prevent certain conditions like diabetes and hypertension.”

For those interested, the fair will also offer attractive gate prizes.”
